Trust plots £1.5m lifeline for Egremont

Posted by MartinHodgson on February 13, 2015

Plans are in motion to save the much-loved ship MV Egremont and secure her long-term future for all to enjoy.

New Egremont Trust chairman Martin Hodgson said he hopes to raise up to £1.5m to transform the Egremont into a ‘marine hub’ fit for the 21st century.

"The first challenge," he said, "is to make sure the ship is safe, and reassure other water users  that we know what we’re doing and that we have a credible plan."

He added: "Our ultimate target is £1.5m, but this is made up of lots of elements including refurbishing the ship, pontoons, dinghies and so on.

"We will submmit a new bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for nearly £1 million towards the restoration of the historic ferry and we will look to raise over £500,000 ourselves through events and support.

"We’ve gone into this with open eyes. It’s a long journey ahead, but lots of people have very fond memories of the ship and it’s amazing how the recent problems have been a catalyst for people to come forward and offer help.
